SMWFC Training schedule 20/11 - 20/12

New Senior Coach appointed

SMWFC are pleased to announce that the Senior Coach for the 2008 season will be Moris Mihailidis, who joins us after most recently coaching Port Melbourne U21s (boys), and the U16 NW regional girls side at the State Championships. Moris will be assisted by Spiro Thalassinos, who will be taking on the role of the WPL Reserves Coach.

Another strong showing at Port Macquarie

Returning to Port Macquarie to compete in the Tracie McGovern Cup for the third straight year, South Melbourne turned in another strong performance against tough interstate opposition. The team suffered a narrow loss to the eventual winners in the semi finals to finish in fourth place. The result enabled the team to maintain its excellent record of finishing in the top four every time it has participated in the event.

U16s finish on high, Seniors robbed at death

The U16s produced a strong finish to their season, with a goal in each half from Chloe Douglas earning them a well-deserved and long awaited victory. Neither of the Open Age teams were as successful, with the Reserves going down 4-0 to GSL, and the Seniors missing out on winning the league with a 2-1 defeat by the same opposition.

Reserves triumph in 7-goal thriller

The Reserves recorded their second successive victory with a thrilling 4-3 result at Southern Suburbs in a sea-sawing match. Both teams enjoyed the lead at stages of the game, but it was South Melbourne that was able to edge in front and hold on for the final whistle. The Seniors also achieved a victory, beating the same opposition 1-0 in a combative match. There was more disappointment for the U16s, however, who were defeated 8-0 by Beaumaris.

Promotion secured with win at Mitcham

The Seniors secured promotion back to the WPL with an emphatic 4-2 victory against Mitcham United. All six goals came in an entertaining second half, which ended Mitcham's chances of reaching the top flight. The Reserves also enjoyed success, defeating Mitcham 2-1. Despite being a goal down, the Reserves persisted until the end, winning the game with a second goal in the last five minutes of the match.

Seniors edge closer to promotion

The Seniors took another big step towards securing promotion, with a determined 3-1 victory over Bayswater Strikers. Despite going a goal down early in the match, South fought back to score three unanswered goals and take the points. Unfortunately, the Reserves went down 6-0 to the same opposition, while the U16s were defeated 8-0 by Ashburton.

Reserves hit University for eight!

The Reserves cruised to their biggest victory of the season with a commanding performance against the University of Melbourne. Building on a five goal first half, the team ended up winning by an impressive 8-1 scoreline. The Seniors were less prolific, but still claimed the all important three points, winning 2-0 against the same opposition.
